A newspaper reader says, a political party will ruin itself
if it makes error like this.
My higher politics says, a party which makes errors like this
is already in decline.
-Friedrich Nietzsche
The ad, I believe, was from 2009.
“Snuggies” were basically blankets with sleeves;
why struggle with blankets,
the voiceover said
while a woman in bed fought with a comforter
as if it were an intruder who crept in the window.
The commercial became fodder for late night comics,
all of whom asked, in one way or another,
are Americans really struggling with blankets?
Blanket statements, blanket immunity.
Blanket defenses and smallpox blankets.
Americans are struggling with something, it seems.
We can say, shame on us, if it happens again.
We can pretend that it crept in the window.
But no matter how far or which way it leans,
come Wednesday morning
we will have to explain–
given all of our vices, devices and privilege,
why the red white and blue is still struggling with blankets.
