The plot focuses on the detective work of Mary Choi, a low-ranking Public Defender in the utopian Los Angeles of 2047. A gruesome murder investigation turns out to have international implications and as she travels to remote corners of the globe in search of the truth, we are treated to some of the exotic locales of Greg Bear's future Earth.
Chronologically the first book in a series of 3 unrelated books set in the same universe. Next comes Slant.
