Mayerling is also the name of a
ballet by Sir
Kenneth MacMillan, based on the same events.
He created it for David Wall at the Royal Ballet, and it was first performed on 14 February 1978, at Covent Garden. Its American premiere was in Los Angeles, and also in that year a television documentary of it won the Prix Italia, the first ballet ever to do so.
In October 1992, during the first night of a revival of Mayerling at Covent Garden, Sir Kenneth had a heart attack and died backstage, at the age of 62. Darcey Bussell went blank and forgot her steps at the following performance, the only time she's ever done that, she says.
