ARDIS is a mobile data system using Motorolas own data network. Much like its nearest competitor, RAM, it is a cellular packet data network for basic mobile capabilities.
It operates using at 800mHz on the Motorola/Bell Mobility DataTAC system and can achieve a theoretical protocol thoughput of 14Kbps, though actual transfer speeds are closer 4Kbps. The ARDIS system has been poised more towards pedestrian and stationary linkages as the DataTAC system has many difficulties with trancievers in motion, especially at high speeds.
Devices that use this include the RIM 850 and 857 2-way communcators and the Motorola PD100 Wiress Communcations PC Card.
Its main competitors include RAM and CDPD.
