Also known as Brusa or Prusa. Port city in northwest
Turkey on
the Silk Road, sutiated at the base of
Mount Olympus. Founded in the 3rd century B.C. by King
Prusias I of
Bithynia.
It was captured by the Seljuk Turks in 1075, the Crusaders in 1096, the Byzantines in 1204 and the Ottoman Turks in 1326. It remained the capital of the Ottoman Empire until it was sacked by Timur in 1402. In 1607, the city would be burned by Janissaries.
Many Ottoman Sultans are entombed in the city, including Osman I and Orkhan. It is also the home of the famous Green Mosque.
