I found a Usenet post from October 1985 on net.jokes claiming it came from the University of Waterloo MathSoc news letter "MathNEWS" volume 39 #1, and was written by "Weird Jim Jordankovic".
That appears to be true, or at least it was published under "Weird Jim Jordankovic". Other issues of MathNEWS have other filks by Weird Jim Jordankovic, so either he really did write it, or he's a serial plagiariser.
