Metaxa is a greek liquor invented in the 19th century by
Spyros Metaxa. A
wine is first made from
Savatiano,
Sultanina and
Black Corinth grapes. This wine is then
double distilled in a similar fashion as
brandy and then aged in
limousine oak casks for some number of years. A combination of botanicals (see
Jagermeister) and
aged muscat wine from
Samos and Lemnos is then blended together with the aged distillates, and then allowed to age together in cask for at least six months. This gives Metaxa its unique character.
The most commonly available forms of Metaxa are the three star, five star and seven star, a star for every year the distillate was aged in the cask.
