After the oppression of the
Great Revolt of the
Jews against the
Romans (71 CE), the triumphant
Romans burned the city of
Jerusalem to the ground, and built another
city in her place. This city was named Ilia Capitolina.
In this new city no Jew was allowed to live. Only after the christianization of the Roman Empire (330 CE) was the name Jerusalem restored to the city. Jews were allowed to return to the city only after the Muslim occupation of the city (640 CE).
