Ae jazba-e dil ghar mai chahoon is a famous Urdu “Ghazal” (poem or ballad) by the poet Behzad Lakhnavi. The original is straightforward but a rendition by Nayyara Noor in the 1970's corrupted the words, reversing much of the poet's intention. In the Noor version - which became lastingly popular in Pakistan, the singer berates herself for her cowardice, paralysis, false-steps and aimlessness while her desires and loves remain unfulfilled.
The Urdu is difficult and involved but I have made an attempt to translate Nayyara Noor's version below:
Strength of my heart,
did I but desire it
Every thing would come to fruition
I would take two strides towards my goal
And my goal would be before me
Strength of my heart
did I but desire it
Whim of my heart,
Let it be as you wish
Here I sit, in the gathering (of drinkers)
Awaken me
When the spirit overtakes the gathering
Strength of my heart, did I but desire it
O you, the perfect guide
I am ready to follow but remember this well
When our goal is before us
Lead me astray
Remember me, Call to me
Remember me, Call to me
On the roads of this love
I would laugh at any obstacle
Strength of my heart, did I but desire it
Why should I look now for the eye of Mercy?
Let there be catastrophe on catastrophe
I desire now, my sorrow,
Only difficulty on difficulty
Strength of my heart
did I but desire it
Every thing would come to fruition
I would take two strides towards my goal
And my goal would be before me
O Strength of my heart,
did I but desire it
