A late
album of
John Coltrane made in
1965. At this point Trane was in full-force searching for
God in his
music. He expanded his classic quintet of
McCoy Tyner,
Jimmy Garrison and
Elvin Jones to include
Pharoah Sanders,
Donald Garrett and
Frank Butler.
Track Listing:
1. Kulu Se Mama
2. Vigil
3. Welcome
4. Selflessness
5. Dusk Dawn
6. Dusk Dawn, alternate take
The album's title track was composed by Juno Lewis, it involves, as the name may suggest, many African influences including some chanting. Selflessness is more of Trane experimenting ala Meditations, the other tracks are older recordings with the original quartet. This album is a little more accesible than some of the really late Trane, but it's still out there, caveat emptor.
