NOT a euphemism, as some think, but rather an archaic terminology for a woman's menstrual cycle. the phrase came about because began to notice that many women's cycles followed the same 28-day cycle that the moon did. additionally, the cycle was part of woman's mystery and secret and magic, and the moon is all the feminine aspects of magic and power, so the association was a natural one to draw.
