History/Info:
US 101 is the last remaining north-south US highway in the west coast that stretches the entire distance, barring the shortening from
San Diego to
Los Angeles in 1966. In California it generally follows the path of the El Camino Real or King's Highway that connected the 21 missions of California. Although,
US Highway 99 and
Interstate 5 took over as becoming the major arteries in the west coast, US 101 still remains an important link for the coastal cities. Infamous/Famous
California Highway 1 used to be an alternate of the highway. Its northern end in
Olympia National Park,
Washington is actually a loop. It also happens to be the only U.S. highway this user has ever seen.
