1999 British film starring
Jonny Lee Miller,
Robert Carlyle and
Liv Tyler, tagline: They
rob the rich ... and that's it.
A semi-fictional account of the exploits of a pair of ruthless
highwaymen in Regency England, what sets this film apart
from more traditional costume dramas is the constant tongue-in-cheek
dry humour and the use of modern language by the exquisitely-dressed
characters. In one very memorable scene a traditional ballroom dance
is set to hardcore techno music. And the sight of a pair of fop[s
waving their handkerchiefs whilst exclaiming "Alright?
GeezAH!" is going to stay with me for many years...
It might not suit all tastes, but if you're a fan of modern British cinema (Trainspotting, Full Monty, Lock Stock etc) it's probably worth watching. Don't expect the answer to the meaning of life, and don't expect absolute historical realism. Just enjoy yourself!
