A town in northern
Wisconsin, near the north shore of
Lake Michigan's
Green Bay. Noted for being completely destroyed by the deadliest
forest fire in
American history; some 1200 people were
killed.
News of the
disaster was slow to emerge and little noted in the rest of the
nation, since the tragedy took place on October 8,
1871 and
newspapers were full of news of the
Chicago Fire just 200 miles to the south.
Also, the name of a band of Menominee who settled in the area.
