Charles Simic was actually born in Belgrade, Yugoslavia, on May 9, 1938. I recently became interested in him when my wife read my on of his poems from the collection (I think) "Frightening Toys."<\p>
THE CHAIR<\P>
The chair was once a student of Euclid.
The book of his laws lay on it's seat.
The schoolhouse windows were open,
so the wind turned the pages
whispering the glorious proofs.
The sun set over the golden roofs,
everywhere the shadows lengthened
but Euclid kept quiet about that.
