A relatively new term for the phenomenon of traveling to a
foreign country to consume
drugs which are
illegal,
controlled, or
unavailable elsewhere. The most famous narcotourism spot is probably
The Netherlands, which attracts a great many
tourists eager for the opportunity to smoke a
joint without being
hassled by the
five-oh.
Time magazine reports that
Laos is becoming a popular destination for people looking for
harder drugs, such as opium and heroin. The term might also be applied to
Americans who cross the border into
Mexico to take advantage of their
notoriously
lax prescription system, obtaining large quantities of
antibiotics,
Valium,
Viagra, etc.
Not to be confused with
necrotourism.
