International Labour Organization - founded in
1919 by
Belgium,
Cuba,
Czechoslovakia,
France,
Italy,
Japan,
Poland,
UK and
USA. Started up the year after in
Geneva with the purpose of
protecting the
labour worldwide and trying to
ensure world peace (as can be seen from these parts of its
constitution: "
conditions of labour exist
involving ...
injustice,
hardship and privation to large numbers of
people.", "universal and lasting
peace can be established only if it is based upon
social justice.", injustice produces "
unrest so great that the peace and harmony of the world are imperilled.", "the
failure of any
nation to adopt
humane conditions of labour is an
obstacle in the way of other nations which desire to
improve the conditions in their own countries.")
For its good work, in
1969, the ILO was awarded the
Nobel Peace Prize.
