Founded by Stephen Gaskin, The Farm is a spiritual, vegetarian community of free thinkers. The community encompasses three square miles in Summertown, Tennessee and is home to approximately 200 persons, though the actual population has fluctuated wildly since its beginning in 1971.

As a community they have a commitment to simple, sustainable living via solar power, permaculture, large-scale composting and gardening as well as practicing regenerative hardwood forest management. They use agreement and mutual respect to solve problems while accepting that there are many paths toward self-realization.

The community has a grocery store, medical clinic, filling station, schools, water systems, pharmacy, post office and cemetery. This is also the home of Ina May Gaskin, midwife and teacher.

"The Farm" is an affectionate slang term for Stanford University, deriving from the fact that its campus was originally an 8000-acre stock farm, used by university founder Leland Stanford to breed horses.
