The slip, slop, and slap
campaign started in
Australia where the national consciousness about
skin cancer and sun exposure has been a “big deal”.
Parents may feel they are doing enough by using
sunscreen but this campaign calls for a bit more. Whenever you or your child will be exposed to sun shine you should...
slip on a
shirt
slop
sunscreen on all exposed skin.
slap on a
hat (preferably with a front brim and neck flaps and/or an all around brim)
Although
skin cancer most often occurs in older people, children need protection. The effects of
sunburn are cumulative and may not appear for years and years. We all need some exposure to sun for
Vitamin D production but the amount of exposure needed for this is small. Three or four times a week with the equivalent of head and hands exposed for 30 minutes is enough.
Slip, slop and slap!!
