A Southern
California artist who works mostly in
paint, but has been known to create
sculpture. Birk's style is
satirical and
appropriative. Most of his works are derivative of works of previous
artists, but involving modern, everyday
artifacts in the imagery.
Birk's early work involved painting the lives and lifestyles of his gang banger and skater neighbors in the style of the old masters. In 1995, he moved to a grandiose project of depicting a fictional war between San Francisco and Los Angeles, rendering about a hundered "historical" paintings, posters, and lithographs in multiple styles that spanned about 500 years of art.
Birk has no homepage, but some of his work can be viewed online at http://www.besscutlergallery.com/popartist_sb.html
