Routing Information Protocol: A classful distance vector still widely used today. One of several IGPs, RIP is used for managing routing info in small, homogenous networks via a hop count metric range of 0 to 16. It uses UDP packets to send routing updates 30 seconds. Cisco's RIP v2 supports MD5, etc. RFC 1723. Upgraded into IGRP.
