In the early 1990s, the Orange County Transportation Commission began funding an additional train on Amtrak's San Diegan route, running weekdays between Los Angeles and San Juan Capistrano. Although the Orange County Commuter used regular Amtrak equipment, it behaved more like a standard commuter train, without the food service available on the San Diegans.
Friday, December 3, 1993, was the last run of the Orange County Commuter as an Amtrak train. The following Monday, it became a Metrolink commuter train and was soon joined by other trains on Metrolink's Orange County Line to supplement the Amtrak San Diegans.
