The Nemean
Lion was one of the
monstrous offspring of
Typhon and
Echidna. With an
impenetrabe hide that protected it from all
weapons, the lion terrorized the people of
Nemea, south of
Corinth. Its
rein of terror was brought to an end by
Herakles, however, who was ordered to
kill it as the first of his
twelve labors. In spite of its near
invulnerability, Herakles managed to dispatch the
beast by strangling it with his
bare hands. He then removed its hide, which served him as
armor for the remainder of his
adventures.
The Nemean Lion's siblings:
Cerberus,
Chimera, the
Eagle of Prometheus,
Hydra,
Nemean Lion,
The Sphinx, and
Orthrus.
