Maman Brigitte is one of the
loa, or spirits, of
Voodoo. Like her husband
Baron Samedi, she is strongly associated with
death and
cemeteries. If the first person buried in a new
cemetary is a woman, that cemetary is said to belong to Maman Brigitte. If the first person buried is a man, it is said to belong to Baron Samedi.
She was one of the loa (Alternately spelled "lwa") that made frequent appearances in William Gibson's Count Zero and Mona Lisa Overdrive.
