KPN / Royal
Dutch Telecom - Traditional national phone carrier for the Netherlands. Went public in June of 1994.
Has done well as a progressive competitive carrier in Europe. KPN has a strong presence in the traditional voice telephony market with about 9 million lines. They also run mobile and data services.
Update: Like most European PTTs KPN is struggling to reduce
debt and become solidly profitable again.
Has access to fiber throughout Europe through their KPNQwest joint-venture with Qwest.
Update: KPNQwest has imploded and no longer exists. The
engineers in the main NOC staged an attempt to keep the
network alive long enough for it to be sold off whole. In
the end the network was shutdown and is being sold off piecemeal.
