EsounD is the Enlightened Sound Daemon. It's a cool program that allows one to play sound from several sources at the same time. For example, MP3 music while still hearing the sound effects from DOOM.

It's only natively supported by a few programs, but many programs that don't support it can be made to use it with a wrapper called esddsp.
