In the US, straps you wear over your shoulders to keep your pants from falling down. In Britain, a contraption used to keep thigh-high stockings from falling down, known as garter belts in the US.

The items known as suspenders in the US are refered to as braces in the UK, the only difference being that they hold up your trousers rather than your pants.
