Until recently, one of the
cardinals, the
Archbishop of
Paris, was born a
Jew. Jean-Marie Cardinal Lustiger was considered a likely
successor to
Pope John Paul II, as he agreed with the
pontiff's very conservative views.
It is worthy to note that there has never been a pope who has taken the name of Peter. A religion teacher of mine postulated that if Lustiger (or anyone else born Jewish) had become Pope, and he takes the name of Peter, the apocalypse will come.
