A sculptor, artist, author. Born and raised in Michigan, he was relatively uninterested in art until enrolling in the University of Michigan. He ended up majoring in fine arts with an advanced degree in sculpture from the Rhode Island School of Design. He was primarily a sculptor at first but started to publish picture books for children when encouraged by others. Since then he's published fifteen books, two of which have been awarded Caldecott Medals and one of which has been turned into a movie and animated show.

He's a great illustrator, rough yet realistic, and comfortable with both color and black and white styles. His stories are simplistic but whimsical and amusing. The strong point of his art, however, is the sense of story in each piece. There's a sense of each picture portraying a world as opposed to it simply being a piece of art or even a scene.
