A term used to describe a phenomenon that occurs when a group of people are speaking to each other. Eventually, the amplitude of the group's voices will drop, sometimes to silence. Lerner, a professor who studied this, found regular patterns in the amplitude of speech among groups of individuals. Personally, I've noticed silencing happens just when someone is saying something overly embarrassing.
