An abnormal condition of pregnancy in which the placenta separates from the uterus before birth. Sever bleeding is often noted as well as pain in the lower abdomen and low blood pressure. In cases where there is only a partial separation and minimal bleeding, the mother to be is placed on strict bed rest. In more severe cases she is hospitalized and given intravenous fluid and blood transfusions if necessary. Often the baby will be delivered by cesarean section.
